The history of the Eternal City is thick with myth and legend, an ancient drama of gods and heroes from a time when humanity and civilization were still new on this earth. This is just a taste of the irresistible romance of one of the most popular cities in the world for tourism, Rome. It’s hard to believe that most of the city, especially the area near the Forum, was dangerous swampland as recently as the early 20th century where only goat herders would not fear to tread. Today, however, this highly-trafficked and the busy urban area is one of the most-visited places on the planet. Many travelers start in Rome via the busy international airport to begin their adventure on the peninsula.
No matter what road led you to Rome, there’s a place to suit your needs and budget in almost any part of town. The city is home to everything from hostels to resorts, and each one is designed with long or short-term visits in mind. Plenty of people visit Rome to stay a long time, while an equal amount are just here for a night or two.
Usually, it’s a certain specific interest that takes people to Rome, whether it’s ruins, cuisine, or architecture, just to name a few. Of course, none of these reasons are mutually exclusive. Combine a wine tour with a sightseeing trip of Rome’s piazza’s, for example. Come for the sights, stay for the food.
Bring your student and teacher ID cards, as many of popular sites and landmarks in the city that require admission offer discounts to those with scholarly connections. You can also use your card for discounts at restaurants, museums, and hostels.
Went is September and the weather was amazing. Bring walking shoes and do the city on foot!
