One of these Flemish towns that got their structure in the medieval times. The old center is very charming, and perfect to visit in a day. It is also centrally located in Flanders. By car you can get anywhere in few hours, but be advised that traffick jams are normal and parking is very difficult in every Flemish city. But from Mechelen you can get anywhere by train with very good connections. Mechelen did have the first railway in Belgium (to Brussels) and it still shows. This is also a good place to spend the night
Belgiums Mechelen in Flanders is a beautiful city with an old important history of the low countries. The Mechelen Bishop's Palace once the seat of the Bishop of the Netherlands. Visit also the beautiful white Saint-Rombouts Church, the narrow medieval streets, quaint shops and all the other beautiful buildings. Drink a delicious "Gouden Carolus" Beer and order a Shrimp croquette, and eat, of course, also a Belgian waffle. Mechelen has many excellent restaurants. We recommend you to visit from Mechelen, Antwerp or Brussels. Or to discover the region.
