Toronto Travel Guide

Visiting Canada's Largest City

The largest city in Canada, multicultural Toronto sits on the edge of Lake Ontario. You can easily combine city life with outdoor pursuits; spend the morning sightseeing or shopping, the afternoon on a beach or enjoying water sports, and the evening dining on cuisine from all over the world, watching a show on “North Broadway”, or enjoying the vibrant nightlife. Diverse Toronto offers something for all.

Things to Do in Toronto

Head to the top of the CN Tower and see the dazzling city skyline from more than 300 metres above the bustling streets below, and then explore some of the city’s ethnic enclaves, including Little India, Koreatown, Chinatown, and Little India. Soak up culture and history at the Royal Ontario Museum, admire an eclectic collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and take a step back in time at Black Creek Pioneer Village or Casa Loma.

For fun and giggles, visit Canada’s Wonderland, one of the best theme parks in North America (open May to October), the year-round world-class Toronto Zoo, or Ripley's Aquarium of Canada. Relax and unwind at the lush High Park or on a sandy beach, such as Bluffer’s Beach.

Because Toronto is a huge city, renting a car can be the best way to reach areas not served by public transportation.

Best Time to Visit Toronto

Summer (between June and August) is the busiest tourist season in Toronto. You can avoid the crowds by visiting in spring or fall. The air can be a little chilly, especially at night, but queues are shorter, and you can often find better deals on your hotel bookings.

It can be freezing on some days between November and April, although seasonal activities, like ice skating, Christmas markets, and the WinterCity Festival, still make this a nice time for a trip. Just remember to wrap up warm! January is typically the coldest month.

Airports in Toronto

Toronto is served by several airports, although the majority of flights arrive in Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The biggest and busiest airport in Canada, it is located 28 km from the downtown core, connected by trains, buses, and taxis.

Short regional flights may arrive in Billy Bishop Toronto City Center Airport (YTZ), sometimes referred to as the Island Airport. It is the closest airport to downtown. Farther out, Hamilton International Airport (YHM) and Waterloo International Airport (YKF) may also, on occasion, be used by tourists to reach Toronto.
