Freetown International Airport Information

Freetown International Airport (FNA), also known as Lungi International Airport, is Sierra Leone's only international airport. It is located in the northwestern quadrant of the country, in the city of Lungi. The airport is made up of one passenger terminal. Nine airlines operate out of FNA, including Air Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya Airways, and Med-View Airline.

Popular Destinations from Freetown

The airlines at Freetown Airport fly nonstop to a handful of destinations, most of which are within Africa. Some popular options include Accra, Ghana; Ikeja, Nigeria; Abidjan, Ivory Coast; and Harbel, Liberia. Via Kenya Airlines, you can also fly direct to Nairobi, Kenya's capital city. Nairobi is famous for their wildlife tours and safari parks, making it a great spot to visit if you're a nature lover.

Flying from Freetown Airport to Europe is also quite simple as there are many nonstop options offered. Air France flies nonstop to Paris, one of the world's most romantic cities. Brussels Airlines flies direct to Brussels, home to the historic Grand Place. And KLM flies direct to Amsterdam, a city with many significant historical landmarks such as the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.

Flights from Freetown Airport to Canada are possible, but will usually require two layovers. A flight into Canada's largest airport, Toronto Pearson (YYZ) will usually stop in Liberia first, then in either Brussels or the Netherlands.

Getting to the Airport

If you're coming from the country's capital, Freetown, the airport is separated from the city by the Sierra Leone River. Most passengers opt to use a ferry to reach the terminal. Ferries are inexpensive, but the trip can take up to a few hours to complete. Water taxis are a more expensive option but will shorten the trip to about 30 minutes. If you're coming from Lungi, the trip is possible by road and will take around two hours. The airport recommends arriving at least three hours before flight departure.

Airport and Travel Tips

Freetown Airport's one terminal is split into three areas: a waiting hall, a departures zone, and an arrivals zone. There is a restaurant in both the waiting area and in the departures zone. Since Sierra Leone's water supply is low, airport amenities like restrooms can sometimes be non-functioning. The airport's V.I.P. lounges are worth the extra cost for their upgraded amenities.
