Manzanillo Airport

If you're dreaming of a golden beach, this is where you can find the reality. The official name of this airport is Playa de Oro International Airport (ZLO), and it's the biggest airport in the province of Colima. Manzanillo Airport is one of Mexico's most important tourist gateways, with close to 200,000 passengers using the airlines here on an annual basis. The airline is on the small side and is equipped with a few essential amenities, like a store and snack bar, and several car rental booths and taxi stations just outside of security and customs. This is where you can find your private car or hotel shuttle if your flight was booked as part of a package. Most of the resorts are only minutes away, but there are a few that are seven or eight kilometers out of town, requiring a longer drive. There are currently no public transport options available from ZLO.

Best time to book a flight to Manzanillo Airport

Of the seven airlines that operate from ZLO, only two operate throughout the year. The good news with booking in the off-season is that you can have your choice of seats, but the bad news is that it might cost you. Use our handy flight search tool to book your ideal flight to paradise. Here is a list of the airlines that operate flights to and from Manzanillo.

  • Aeromexico and Alaska Airlines are the only two airlines at ZLO that operate throughout the year. There are always flights to Los Angeles via Alaska Airlines. You can go to Mexico City, also known as the DF, anytime on Aeromexico.
  • American Airlines and United Airlines operate seasonal flights to destinations in the United States, specifically Phoenix, AZ and Minneapolis, MN.
  • Sun Country and Magni operate holiday flights only, often in connection with local resorts and other tourist hotspots. The first is an American airline operating from Minneapolis and St. Paul; the second is based in Mexico City.
  • Westjet is the bold Canadian holdout serving our very own snowbird population, Westjet connects to Manzanillo via its home base in Calgary. These flights require at least one stop and are operated in part by Aeromexico.

Book early to take advantages of package deals in the high season and keep your eye out for last-minute sales, too.

What to See and Do in Manzanillo

The airport may be on the no-frills side, but that's only because the real beauty is just outside the front doors. Choose one of many ways to explore the surrounding city and area, which has drawn visitors, traders, and tourists for centuries.

  • The Green Flash.
  • An ancient legend says that when the green flash appears at sunset, souls return from the dead, or that those who have seen it can read minds and no longer be deceived. No matter what stories you've heard, you have a better chance of seeing this rare phenomenon here than anywhere else in the world.
  • Las Hadas. The most famous resort in a town filled with famous resorts, movie buffs will recognize "the Fairies" as the set for Bo Derek's film, "10." Amenities here include a private beach, golf course, several pools, and a few restaurants and bars.
  • Santiago Bay. The warm, hospital waters of the area are already notorious among snorkelers and divers, and this bay also has a sunken cargo ship to explore. The bay is just a short trip north of the city and is lined with several coral reefs and smaller shipwrecks.
