Best Time to Book a Flight to Deline

For most tourists, the best time to visit Deline will be between June and August. The weather during these summer months is generally warm and sunny, though there may be some rainy days. During the rest of the year, the weather ranges from cool to utterly frigid. January is usually the coldest month of the year, with ample snowfall and temperatures averaging around -25° C. If you're a fan of winter sports, the snowiest months are October and November. But take caution when visiting Deline between October and February as the freezing temperatures will require very warm clothing and extra cold-weather safety measures.

Airlines that Fly to Deline Airport

Currently, the only airline offering scheduled service to Deline Airport is North-Wright Airways. The airline flies to and from its main base airport, Norman Wells Airport (YVQ) and to two other Northwest Territories airports, Tulita Airport (ZFN) and Yellowknife Airport (YZF). If you're flying to Deline from a location outside of the Northwest Territories, your layover will most likely be at YZF as it is by far the busiest airport of the three.

Arriving at Deline Airport

Deline Airport is a one-terminal airport located about 3 km from Deline, or about 10 minutes away by car. As the airport serves relatively few passengers, you won't find any taxis waiting outside. Instead, contact the airport staff to help you find a ride if you don't already have transportation arrangements. In the winter, the heavy snow conditions sometimes make snowmobiles a more viable transportation option than standard trucks or cars.

Deline Airport Facilities

As the passenger terminal is quite small, don't expect anything but the basics at Deline Airport. If you want to shop for souvenirs or eat a meal, you'll have to leave the airport. A bonus of the airport being so tiny, however, is that it won't take very long to deplane and collect your baggage. On your way home, plan to be at the airport and checked in at least an hour before flight departure.

What to See and Do in Deline

Expect to learn a lot about indigenous culture when visiting Deline. Local guides are available throughout the year to teach about the area's traditions and historical significance as a trading post. They will also take you out to Great Bear Lake to do some fishing (or ice fishing in the winter) and on a journey throughout the area to see some of the native wildlife. Deline is also famous for being the birthplace of hockey, so expect to watch and play a lot of the sport if you visit during the winter months.
