Best Time to Book a Flight to Port-Menier, Quebec

Port-Menier is located on the western shore of Quebec's Anticosti Island, a beautiful but sparsely populated island at the outlet of the Saint Lawrence River. Winters can be windy and cold, so we recommend travelling during the spring or summer instead.

The weather is best from mid-June to the end of August. Seafood lovers will want to visit during May and June, when crab and lobster are in season, while bird-watchers should consider a trip during July, when thousands of seabirds, ducks, and terns come to the island in search of food during migration. Plan on bringing a warm coat even in the summer, as weather can sometimes be unpredictable.

Airlines that Fly to Port-Menier Airport

Port-Menier Airport offers flights through Air Liaison and Pascan Aviation from a variety of destinations throughout Quebec, including Quebec City (YQB), Sept-Iles (YZV), and Havre St-Pierre (YGV). If you're travelling from outside Quebec, you'll want to plan a route through YQB, which is a major Canadian airport with many connections to other domestic locations.

What to Expect When Arriving at Port-Menier Airport

YPN is conveniently located just 7km from the town of Port-Menier. To get there by car, follow the road out of the airport and turn left on Chemin de l'Aeroport. After about 4km, turn left again on to Chemin de Ferme and follow that road into town. There is no taxi service in Port-Menier, but most hotels offer a shuttle service from the airport. You can rent a car from Location Sauvageau in town to take through the national park or rent a bike from the municipality for $20 per day.

There are very few people in Port-Menier who speak English fluently. If you're planning a visit, you should brush up on your French! Mobile service and internet are not reliable in this area, so you should always tell someone where you are heading if you plan on leaving the town. That way, if your car breaks down, they can send someone to find you!

Port-Menier Airport Facilities

YPN is a very small airport with one terminal, one runway, and few amenities. Needless to say, you should have no trouble finding your gate. There is a vending machine on-site, but not much else. Plan on grabbing a bite to eat before you leave for the airport. You should arrive for your flight at least 60 minutes before departure so you have enough time to check your bags and settle in before your flight.

What to See and Do in Port-Menier

Port-Menier is known for the surrounding Anticosti National Park, which is dotted with hiking trails, teeming with wildlife, and full of great camping, fishing, and hunting opportunities. Port-Menier is a very popular destination for hunting deer especially, but you'll need a provincial license to do so.

Just outside of town, you'll see the remains of the first settlement Henri Menier started back in 1895, the village of Baie-Sainte-Claire. If you follow the road that runs along the shore to the Pointe-Ouest lighthouse, you'll also see the remains of a Catholic cemetery as well as the old lighthouse keeper's house, which has since been converted into an inn. There is also a free Eco-Museum located on Chemin de Forestiers, which offers an exhibit on the history of the island as well as its local ecology.
