San Juan Airport: Cheap Flights, Tickets and Travel Deals

The city of San Juan in Argentina is known as the Oasis Town, thanks to its tree-lined streets and irrigation canals in a region that is otherwise hot and arid. While much of the city's colonial architecture has been destroyed by earthquakes, most notably in the devastating 1944 earthquake, the city has rebuilt itself with broad boulevards and a relaxed, open appearance that reminds one of the Mediterranean. With a thriving wine industry and close to the lunar landscapes of Ischigualasto National Park, San Juan offers plenty to see and do.

San Juan Airport (officially Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Airport) is the main airport serving the city, with connections to Buenos Aires and a handful of other Argentinian and Chilean cities. To make sure you get the best deal on flights to San Juan, sign up for Price Alerts from Skyscanner.

Flying to or from San Juan Airport

Currently only three airlines operate out of San Juan Airport: Aerolineas Argentinas, Austral Lineas Aereas, and LATAM Argentina. Both Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral Lineas Aereas operate exclusively to Jorge Newbery Aeroparque in Buenos Aires. LATAM Argentina, meanwhile, also flies to Buenos Aires-Jorge Newbery, but also to Mendoza and Santiago de Chile. Be advised that while Jorge Newbery Aeroparque is a major airport, it is not the main international airport in Buenos Aires, which would be Ezeiza International Airport.

Transportation Options

The airport is located approximately 11 km away from the city centre. The drive takes about 15 to 20 minutes and can be reached via taxi or by your own car. You can rent a car at the airport. Navigating San Juan is fairly easy since most of the city is built on a grid system surrounded by ring roads.

Terminal Information

San Juan Airport is a small and rather dated facility that is in need of a major renovation. There's a small waiting area and the WiFi works generally well. In terms of amenities you are limited to a small snack bar. One of the unique features of this airport is that it features a dinosaur skeleton in the park at its entrance, a reminder that this region is one of the world's richest in terms of dinosaur fossils.

What to see and do in San Juan

While San Juan doesn't get as much attention as nearby Mendoza, it has plenty to offer visitors who are looking for an exciting wine region (but without Mendoza's bustle and hordes of tourists). Vineyards dot the countryside and many offer tours and tastings. The city centre itself, with its leafy avenues and relaxing plazas, is worth a stroll. The cathedral, designed by architect Daniel Ramos Correa, is the main sight in the city and is good for a visit. The region is home to one of the world's richest collection of Triassic fossils while the Ischigualasto National Park, located about three hours north of San Juan, is one of Argentina's great natural wonders and where you will find gorgeous landscapes and unique rock formations. Hotels are plentiful in San Juan, and Skyscanner can help you find a hotel to complete your dream vacation.
