Samarinda Airport: Cheap Flights, Tickets and Travel Deals

Samarinda is an important city on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. While the city does not attract a huge number of tourists,  Borneo itself is a fascinating destination for adventurous travellers. In fact, the beaches of eastern Borneo are considered some of the most beautiful in the world while the island itself is one of the most bio-diverse on the planet.

Samarinda is currently served by the old and cramped Samarinda Airport, also known as the Temindung Airport. However, a new airport is currently under construction, which will replace Temindung Airport as the Samarinda Airport. Due to delays and financial problems, however, it is unclear when the new airport will be completed. That being said, you can always book a flight to Samarinda by using Skyscanner's excellent search feature. Flying to or from Samarinda Airport

The current Samarinda (Temindung) Airport has very limited capacity and is only served by Aviastar and Kaltim Airlines, which offer limited regional flights. However, when the new Samarinda Airport is complete with a longer runway, more airlines and destinations are expected to serve this East Borneo city, including:

  • Aviastar
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kalstar Aviation
  • Lion Air
  • Malaysian Airlines
  • Susi Air

Transportation Options

The current Samarinda Airport is extremely close to the central part of the city, and the most convenient way to get around is by hiring a taxi. Simply go outside, and you will find them in the small parking lot. When the new Samarinda Airport is complete, there should be a more diverse array of transportation options, including a dedicated rail link. You can also rent a car for greater convenience when getting around Samarinda.

Terminal Information

The current terminal at Samarinda Airport is extremely small and outdated. Don't expect much in the way of amenities. As mentioned, a new airport is under construction, but it has run into serious delays, and it is not clear now when it will actually be finished. The government has stepped in to provide additional funding, but that seems to have only led to more confusion about a possible completion date. However, once finally finished Samarinda will have a modern and spacious terminal that it deserves for a city of its size.

What to see and do in Samarinda

Samarinda is not a tourist destination, but it is where adventurous travellers will want to go to experience the "real" Indonesia. While you won't find much in the way of sprawling museums or postcard-perfect monuments, you will get a glimpse of traditional Indonesian life. The markets are an especially fascinating way to experience the local culture, with plenty of food and crafts on offer. Samarinda is also an important centre of East Kalimantan, which occupies much of eastern and northern parts Borneo. East Kalimantan offers some spectacular beaches on its east coast while its remote interior is where you will find orangutang refuges. When looking for a hotel in Samarinda Skyscanner can help you find a room for an unbeatable price.
