Papua New Guinea's Rabaul Airport: Cheap Flights, Tickets, and Travel Deals

Rabaul Airport (RAB) is a small domestic airport in Tokua, Papua New Guinea. Serving the cities of Rabaul and Kokopo within East New Britain Province, this tiny single-terminal facility doesn't see much international action. However, Skyscanner can offer one exciting piece of trivia about Rabaul Airport: the original airport was destroyed by an erupting volcano in 1994! Since then, RAB has been fully rebuilt and it's ready to accept the planes that arrive from local airports across this island nation.

Canadian travellers will find it a bit tricky and time-consuming to reach Rabaul Airport. There are no direct flights to this domestic airport or Papua New Guinea itself from Canada. So, Canadians are advised to fly into Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea, which is reachable from major airports in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Manila. From there, you can travel to Rabaul Airport with Air Niugini, which is this island nation's main airline. Flights between Port Moresby and Rabaul are offered daily.

Amenities

Very little is publicly known about the amenities at Rabaul Airport, especially since they don't have an official website. Consequently, Canadian travellers are encouraged to pick up any necessities before arriving at RAB. Being a small domestic airport in a low-traffic area of Papua New Guinea, Rabaul is unlikely to host any upscale amenities or services for tourists.

The City

Rabaul is the former capital city of East New Britain, a province in Papua New Guinea. Almost completely destroyed in 1994 by a volcanic explosion, the city has since rebuilt itself to once again become a popular destination for snorkelling and scuba diving enthusiasts. The local cuisine is also a highlight. Traditional dishes are universally delicious, featuring fresh seafood, sweet potatoes and other starches, and locally-sourced produce.
