Oaxaca International Airport: Cheap Flights, Tickets, and Travel Deals

Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) is a small, one-terminal airport in Oaxaca, Mexico. Sometimes known as Xoxocotlán International Airport, it primarily hosts regional carriers and airplanes arriving from select American cities. OAX itself isn't much to write home about, but this little airport provides a gateway into the historic city of Oaxaca. Featuring glorious architecture, colourful buildings, and delicious cuisine, Oaxaca is one of Mexico's last hidden gems.

Oaxaca International Airport is situated 10 km south of Oaxaca's city centre. To reach your downtown hotel from the airport, the drive takes about 30-minutes by car or taxi. No public transportation is currently available. For unbeatable rates on the rental cars at OAX, check out Skyscanner's car hire listings.

Several domestic and international airlines are hosted by Mexico's Oaxaca Airport, including:

  • Aeromar
  • Aeroméxico
  • Aerotucán
  • Aerovega
  • Interjet
  • TAR Aerolineas
  • United Airlines
  • VivaAerobus
  • Volaris

Unfortunately, none of these carriers offer direct flights to or from Canada. We advise Canadian travellers to board a connecting flight in Los Angeles, Houston, Cancún, or Mexico City, depending on your departure city and whether you'd prefer to reconnect in the USA or Mexico.

Cancún International Airport (CUN) is arguably the top choice for most Canadians. This four-terminal airport boasts an impressive number of Air Canada and Air Transat trips. Canadian flights arrive in CUN from Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montréal, Ottawa, Québec City, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg--just to name a few cities!

Spotlessly clean and spacious for its size, Oaxaca International Airport offers all the amenities you need for a successful trip or a happy landing. On-site, there's an excellent café, several gift shops, and banking services to exchange your Canadian dollars for Mexican pesos. The most charming feature of OAX is its beautiful public art, created by Mexican and indigenous artist, which is showcased both within the terminal and around the airport's outside property.

Located at Mexico's southern end, Oaxaca is an infrequent but worthwhile travel destination for Canadian tourists. The city's Zapotec and Mixtec ruins at Monte Alban have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As Oaxaca's most famous attraction, this ancient burial site can be visited for about $60 with a guided tour. For architecture lovers, there are plenty of beautiful plazas and ornate churches to visit around town. Year-round festivals are another popular tourist attraction. For instance, Oaxaca has some of Mexico's most fun and dynamic Dia de Los Muertos celebrations!

When it comes to dining, Oaxaca also shines brightly. Delicious, affordable dishes are available at many of the downtown restaurants, which often feature open-air terraces and an extensive tequila selection. But be warned, things can get spicy! Oaxaca's chefs love using lots of hot tamales and chilis in their cooking.
