Getting to La Serena Airport

Flying into La Serena means first making your way to Santiago, Chile. Flights to the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL), are available from many Canadian cities, with Toronto having some direct flights on Air Canada. Other airlines with one- or two-stop itineraries include American Airlines, Aeromexico, Avianca, Delta, United and the LATAM Airlines group. Codesharing on the one or two-stop itineraries is common. Codesharing is where you buy a ticket on one carrier, but you fly one or more flight segments on a partner airline. The Skyscanner flight screen notes the carriers used on each itinerary.

Once at the Santiago, Chile, airport, you can board a flight for La Serena using JetSmart, LATAM Express or Sky Airline. Flight time is about an hour. Sky Airline flies daily; the other carriers provide flights Monday through Saturday. Depending on your itinerary and flight connections, you may want to make Santiago a stopover point and catch your plane to La Serena the next day. Skyscanner can help book hotels in both cities.

Airport Facilities

Although La Serena Airport may only have one terminal, it can get very busy, especially during the summer tourist season. Chile is in the Southern Hemisphere and the seasons are the opposite of those in North America, making flights busier during the Canadian winter. The terminal, open from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm, has shops, ATMs, public phones and free Wi-Fi. A bar and restaurant are on the second floor.

Rental counters are next to baggage claim, while taxis are just outside the arrival doors. A taxi fare into the centre of town runs about $15 CAD. Airport transfer vans cost about $5 CAD to make the same trip and about $6 CAD to the resort area. Once in town, the city bus service operates from early morning until around 10:00 pm. You can get most places around town for around $1 CAD. Accepted currency is the Chilean peso.

Things to do in La Serena

  • Combine your love of beaches with some local history with a visit to the Faro Lighthouse. Located on one of the city's best beaches, it dates back to the 1950s when it was gifted to the city. The white tower is paired with a castle-like base, both with distinctive red roofs. Popular with locals and tourists alike, it's a great place to get a panoramic view of the city, beach and the Pacific.
  • Love museums? Visit the Archeological Museum and come face to face with a Rapa Nui moai statue from Easter Island. The giant statue is the only one from the island that was displayed in Europe. It now has a permanent place in La Serena, closer to its island home. The Museo Historico Gabriel Gonzalez Videla features local history, while the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory gives tours of its four-metre telescope, one of the largest on the planet.
