Getting to Loja Airport

Getting to Loja Airport means first booking a flight to the Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), in Quito, Ecuador. Flights are available from Calgary Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Itineraries have at least one-stop in each direction either in the United States, Mexico or other Latin American countries. Carriers flying this route include Aeromexico, American Airlines, Avianca and LATAM Airlines. Codesharing, where you buy a ticket on one carrier but fly part of the trip on a partner airline, is common. The Skyscanner flight screen will note if a codeshare applies.

Once in Quito, your connection to Loja Airport will likely be on TAME Airlines. Loja is the hub for that carrier. Depending on your connections and flying time, you might consider doing a stopover in Quito and then flying to Loja the following day. Skyscanner's hotel screen can help with accommodations in both cities.

Airport Facilities

Loja Airport is small, with one terminal that is easy to navigate but with limited passenger services. Arriving and departing passengers share the same space, with the airline counters on one end and the baggage claim on the other. No rental cars are available, nor are any ATMs. The accepted currency is the US Dollar, and since it's sometimes hard to exchange cash in this rather remote area, it's best to do so before leaving home.

Taxis are the primary mode of transport into the downtown Loja, charging about $18 CAD for the 34-kilometre, 55-minute trip. Rates are negotiated before you leave the airport. Once you get to town, you'll find scores of taxis available, all charging about $2 CAD upfront, to get anywhere within the city. A metro bus system charges less than $1 CAD within city limits. Many people opt to just walk around this small town. It's possible to rent a car and driver to go farther afield. Rates are negotiated.
