Cheap Flights to Liberia Airport

Costa Rica's Liberia Airport (LAP), more properly known as the Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport, is on the southern end of the country roughly 15 kilometres from the small city of Liberia. If you love to explore the natural world, let Skyscanner's innovative booking engine help you find the cheapest airfares to this Central American paradise. To get the cheapest rates, try using the Whole Month Search program to compare prices. Being just a bit flexible can often save you some serious cash. Book your hotel and a car, if needed, and you're set to explore this tropical locale.

Getting to Liberia Airport

Flights to the Liberia Airport are available from Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver with the best routes having one stop in each direction. Passengers in Western Canada often fly on WestJet, Alaska Air or Horizon Air, with stops in Los Angeles, California, or Seattle, Washington. The same carriers are available out of Toronto, with the addition of Copa Air, American Airlines and Aeromexico. Sunwing Airlines also has seasonal flights out of Montreal and Toronto. Codeshare flights are common no matter what airport you depart from. For example, you buy a ticket on WestJet but one or more of your flights might be on a partner airline, such as Alaska Air. The flight screen in Skyscanner lists the codeshare flights if applicable.

Airport Facilities

Liberia Airport is a single terminal facility which can get quite busy due to the influx of Eco-tourists. It's still easy to navigate but does have limited services. A couple of cafes are available, as well as a currency exchange office, a duty-free shop and a counter to pay your departure tax. Save some cash to pay this before you board your flight home. Credit cards are accepted but the exchange rate isn't favourable. Currency is the Costa Rican Colon. You'll also find that due to limited space, air carriers share check-in desks. If you arrive more than three hours before your return flight your airline may not be set up to check in passengers.

Rental cars are available at the airport, but it is recommended that you book ahead due to availability. Also, advise if you need an automatic transmission car. Shared airport shuttles meet almost every flight, but you must pre-book. The shuttles wait until all their booked passengers from a particular flight are on board. Taxis are available, but small and not really designed for more than two passengers. The trip into downtown Liberia takes about 25 minutes. Rates are negotiated before you leave the airport. Public buses are available but they have no space for luggage, are not air conditioned and you may end up standing. Speaking Spanish does help, especially when trying to navigate the sometimes challenging bus schedules.

Things to do in Liberia, Costa Rica

  • Unless you speak at least a little Spanish and are somewhat familiar with the area, guided tours are your friends. Once you leave the city centre, you are at the edge of a still very wild place. Two of the not to miss outdoor sites include the Llano del Cortez Waterfall, great for swimming and relaxing, and Rincon de la Vieja National Park. If you're driving, you can do Rincon on your own. The park is about 20 kilometres away and has an admission fee of roughly $10.00 CAD per person. Taking an all-day adventure tour lets you more fully explore the area and offers options such as horseback riding, white water tubing and a visit to a volcanic hot mud spring.
  • Just strolling around Liberia makes things interesting. In one part of town, you'll find houses still made of mud with palm tree roofs. Get to know the locals at the Feria, or farmers' market, held every Thursday in the centre of town. Look for fresh produce, local meats, cheeses and various handmade goods.
