Getting to Koggala Airport
Some of the airlines flying to Koggala Airport include Air Canada, SriLankan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern, Emirates, KLM and Japan Airlines. Most flights leave from Vancouver or Toronto and have at least one stop. Codesharing is common. A codeshare is when you are booked with one airline, but fly one or more legs with a partner airline. Look for the list of codeshare airlines on itineraries where this applies. Your final leg will be on SriLankan Airlines, the only scheduled carrier that flies into Koggala Airport. All other commercial flights are on domestic charters or helicopters. Some helicopter firms specialize in heli-tours.
Koggala Airport was once a Royal Air Force base. It now handles domestic flights as well as military aircraft. The runway is large enough to handle jets, but you usually find most domestic carriers using prop planes. The single terminal is small, with limited services. You'll find vending machines, a small shop and a food counter.
No car rentals are available at the airport, but you can rent a car in Galle, the nearest town, about 15 kilometres away. Transportation options to Galle include tuk-tuks or taxis. Tuk-tuks are oversized three-wheeled scooters with a passenger compartment in the back. They come in all sizes, so they don't always have room for lots of luggage. Cost into Galle runs about $5 CAD. A taxi ride runs about $16 CAD for the same trip. Both transportation types usually make the run in less than 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once in town, tuk-tuks are the most popular form of transport. Accepted currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee.
Things to do in Koggala
- Head for Koggala Beach, a strip of very wide, white sand that's considered one of the most eye-popping locales on the planet. Visit the nearby turtle hatchery that rescues injured turtles and helps protect their eggs. They buy turtle eggs from local fishermen, keep them until they hatch and then release the baby turtles. Leatherheads and loggerhead turtles often nest on this beach. The endangered green sea turtle is sometimes found.
- Nearby is Koggala Lake, actually a lagoon that's surrounded by mangroves and home to tiny islands with abundant bird populations. Motorboat and catamaran tours are great for bird watching and for getting you out to some of the more interesting sites. Explore a cinnamon plantation, a Buddhist temple and the Ananda Spice Gardens, each on their respective islands. Sip herbal wine at the spice garden and then maybe take some home. Spices are also for sale.
- Interested in local culture? The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, named after a famed local writer, tells the story of the Sri Lankan people. When the air base was put in, this was the only building to escape demolition. Today it houses age-old fishing tools, Buddha statues and other agricultural artifacts. A carriage designed to be pulled by an elephant is also on display.
