- Like the airport, the town of Ixtepec is on the small side. It's pretty laid back, with a few quaint hotels, shops and cafes and small enough to explore on foot. Public transportation is limited, so if you want to go exploring that car might come in handy. Or, you could catch a taxi and negotiate a rate to your destination.
- The Oaxaca area is known for its natural spas. Underground springs have been adapted to accommodate swimmers and sunbathers. Think of these springs as low-keyed resorts with huge free-form swimming pools. About 15 kilometres north of Ixtepec, in the town of Santiago Laollaga, a 25-minute drive away, is the Laollaga Spa, complete with changing rooms, parking and a restaurant.
- Another natural pool in the Isthmus of Oaxaca is Ojo de Aqua de Tlacotepec, about 13 kilometres away and a 21-minute drive. In addition to the already named amenities, this one has a children's play area and several smaller pools to explore.
