Getting to Osaka Itami Airport

Flights to Osaka Itami are available from Toronto and Vancouver, with itineraries having at least one stop in either direction. Most flights are on Air Canada and All Nippon Airways, or a combination of the two, known as codesharing. You might buy your ticket on Air Canada but you fly part of your trip on All Nippon, or even another airline partner. The Skyscanner flight screen notes if there is a codeshare.

Most flights from Vancouver and Toronto connect in Tokyo, which has two airports, Narita International (NRT) and Haneda International (HND). Despite the international labels, Narita handles most of the international traffic, while Haneda handles mostly domestic. Most international flights require you to take ground transportation between Narita and Haneda to catch your flight to Osaka. The Narita Express connects both airports and makes the trip in about an hour. The basic fare costs about $35 CAD. First class rates and round trip fares are available. Purchase your ticket at the kiosks near baggage claim. Some flights from Toronto fly into Haneda, eliminating this step.

Airport Facilities

Osaka Itami has one terminal building, divided into the North Terminal and the South Terminal. All Nippon Airways usually arrives at the South Terminal. The divided terminals converge in a central area where you'll find security checkpoints and most passenger services. WiFi is available throughout. Manned communication desks also offer SIM cards to use in your mobile device while in Japan. Charging stations are also found in passenger waiting areas.

The Osaka Monorail connects the airport to the northern part of Osaka. To get to the centre of town, you'd connect to the Hankyu metro line. Cost depends on final destination, as does travel time. With the connections, plan on at least an hour. An easier option is to catch one of the Airport Limousine Buses, found outside the arrival doors. Fares to the Osaka area begin at about $7 CAD, and the trip can take 30 minutes or more. Taxis are the most direct option, usually taking 20 minutes unless you run into heavy traffic. Fares, including the cost for the toll road, are roughly $55 CAD for the 15-kilometre drive.

What to See and Do in Kyoto

Another popular destination in Kyoto, particularly for shoppers, is the Nishiki Market, a vibrant five-block market. For travellers interested in learning about modern-day Japanese culture, a trip to the Kyoto International Manga Museum is a must.

Kyoto is one of Japan's most exciting cities and a great holiday destination to explore after arriving at Itami Airport. Once they've found a hotel and rental car, travellers can start experiencing this amazing city.

  • Osaka Castle, a reconstructed historic structure, is now one of the best-known sites in the city. It is also one of the best places to check out those cherry blossoms in the spring. Locals come to picnic and relax, enjoying the fragrance of the pink flowers. Osaka also has an extensive Japanese garden, including the famed Bonsai trees. These are miniatures of adult trees that have been methodically trimmed and shaped. Another famed locale is the Naniwa Palace Site Park. Little more than the foundations of the palace, built in 643 AD, survive. The large, grassy grounds are another picnic spot.
  • The Kamigat Ukiyoe Museum is a local favourite. It's dedicated to the art of Japanese woodblock prints. Most signage is in Japanese, but the artwork speaks for itself. The larger Osaka Museum of History, on the grounds of Osaka Castle, focuses on the city's history. The 1,800-year-old Sumiyoshi Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto temples in Japan, is a quiet place to reflect. Stroll along the pathways past tranquil ponds and over a traditional arched bridge in the temple's Japanese garden.
