Even if you are renting a car, you'll need a taxi into town because there are no rental desks at the airport. Some car companies will pick you up at the airport, especially if you book ahead. Don't forget to get an international driver's license before you leave Canada.

  • The main gathering place in town is Sara Square, part shopping bazaar, part outdoor park, with plenty of seating. Locals tend to gather to read books, chat or just drink tea and people watch. Another hot spot is the Sarchinar Resort, about five kilometres west of town. It is literally an oasis in the desert, with plenty of shade palms, fountains, a freshwater swimming pool, restaurants, a kid's play area and a small zoo.
  • The Great Mosque in the centre of town is another hub, especially on Fridays. Visitors to the mosque are allowed outside of prayer times, just be sure to observe local customs for dress and the separation of men and women. Right across from the mosque is a Chinese shopping mall, offering local goods as well as items from Turkey, and of course, China.
