Getting to Sulaymaniyah International Airport

Flights from Canada to Sulaymaniyah originate in Toronto. Of course, you can book connecting flights to Toronto from elsewhere in the country. Nearly all flights are codeshares with at least two stops. Your air ticket is booked with one airline, but you fly with partner airlines for more than one leg. One of the most popular routes is combining WestJet with Qatar Airways; another is pairing British Airways with Qatar. Other carriers you may fly with include Air Canada, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Finnair, Turkish Airlines and Primera Air. Look for the "Self Transfer" notation under the airline price. This means you may have to check your bags between flights, instead of going through security just once. You may also need a visa travel document to touch down in some countries, even if it's just for a connecting flight.

Sulaymaniyah International has two terminals, one for arrivals and the other for departures. A connecting lounge is between the two adjacent spaces, which includes a cafe. A separate VIP terminal is used by dignitaries and other government officials and has its own lounge. The arrival terminal has the Customs and Immigration checkpoints, a bank, post office, shops, a tourist information office and a mosque. This is a mostly a regional airport and not excessively busy. Just outside baggage claim are the taxi stands. Taxis are the preferred transport into the city. Rates for the 25-minute trip run about $20 CAD. Even if you are renting a car, you'll need a taxi into town because there are no rental desks at the airport. Some car companies will pick you up at the airport, especially if you book ahead. Don't forget to get an international driver's license before you leave Canada.
