Getting to Hai Phong Airport

Getting to Hai Phong Airport (HPH) means first getting to Ho Chi Minh City Airport (SGN), also known as Tan Son Nhat International. Catch a flight from Calgary, Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver. The most efficient routings have one-stop, often in Saigon, Peking or Hong Kong. Some airlines on this route include Air China, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern and China Southern. Codeshare flights, those where you book on one carrier but fly one or more segments on a partner airline, are sometimes used, more often on flights from eastern Canada. You'll find notations on the individual flight itineraries if this is the case. WestJet is often used to connect within Canada.

From Ho Chi Minh City, your flight to Hai Phong could be on Hahn Air, Jetstar Pacific, VietJet Air or Vietnam Airlines. Most routings are direct, with flights being about two hours. Your trip from Canada, especially from the eastern end of the country, is long and you do cross the International Date Line. It might be worth it to book a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City as a stopover. Skyscanner can help with that reservation as well as at your final destination.

Airport Facilities

Hai Phong Airport has two terminals, with most flights using the new Terminal 1. Barely two years old, this passenger-friendly terminal is definitely new-age, with expanses of glass protecting the terminal entrances, passenger loading zones and the taxi stands. Arriving and departing passengers share the same space on the first level. You'll find baggage claim, car rental desks and easy access to the outside transportation stops. Shops, cafes and ATMs are found in this main passenger area. A larger café is on the second floor, which leads to the gates. Wi-Fi is found throughout the airport.

Taxis are a great way to get into town, especially if you're carrying lots of luggage. The fare averages $45 CAD and is quoted in advance. This works out great, especially if you run into traffic and that 40-minute drive takes considerably longer. It's possible to take a taxi from the airport to the Lac Long bus station and then catch the bus to the Bai Chay area, where you'll find most of the hotels, for about $30 CAD total. On the downside, this trip can take up to three hours, depending on connections and traffic. As far as getting around town, taxis are also a favourite. Several tours are offered that include transportation and a chatty driver to keep you entertained. Accepted currency is the Vietnamese dong.

Things to do in Hai Phong

  • It's not surprising that Hai Phong is a city of history, whether it's museums filled with artifacts or pagodas that have stood for generations. Hai Phong Museum, the largest, is devoted to natural and cultural histories. Head over to the Navy Museum, right next door, to discover the history of the Vietnamese Navy. The Oceanology Museum is dedicated to creatures of the sea, both the extinct and the living.
  • Du Hang Pagoda, an elegant three-story structure with highly decorated up-swept corners, is the most famous of the sacred shrines. Bronze statuary accents the grounds, ranging from mini-pagodas to comical pieces such as a crane standing atop a tortoise. Around the city, you'll find several other pagodas of various sizes, some quite boldly coloured, others with lace-like architecture.
  • For some time in the great outdoors, check out Cat Ba National Park. Guided tours take you from your hotel to the park in about 25 minutes. Follow the trails past banyan trees, colourful birds and sometimes very chatty monkeys. Some tours include exploring Lan Ha Bay or a ride around the village with stops for food and shopping.
