Cheap Flights to Hat Yai Airport

Hat Yai, Thailand, is a city where people are just as comfortable living on the water as they are on land. Interested in going on a shopping trip that means heading to the harbour and checking out the boat-shops? Skyscanner can help. Get the cheapest airfare and look into booking your hotel accommodations. Be flexible with your travel dates and use the Whole Month Search to find the cheapest days to fly, usually mid-week. Pick your dates, then your flights and you're set. It may take a bit of effort to get to this rather remote town, but that's just part of the fun.

Getting to Hat Yai Airport

Your journey to Hat Yai Airport (HDY) begins with a flight to Bangkok, Thailand, specifically Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International (BKK). Flights are offered from Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Depending on your point of departure, your carrier could be Air Canada, China Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific or China Southern. Most flights into Bangkok from Vancouver have one-stop, while from the other airports two-stops are more common. Codeshares, flights where you buy a ticket on one carrier but fly on a partner airline for one or more segments, do happen. The flight listing will note if any codeshare flights are in a specific itinerary.

Once in Bangkok, you'll board a 90-minute flight to Hat Yai on Thai Smile, Bangkok Airways or Thai Airlines. Because of the lengthy flight from Canada, you might consider booking an overnight stay in Bangkok before travelling to Hat Yai. Several flights per day are available, so that's entirely up to you. Skyscanner can help with hotel options in both locales.

Airport Facilities

Once at Hat Yai Airport, you're only 14 kilometres from the city's downtown core, about a 25-minute drive by car. The airport has one passenger terminal with four floors and ten passenger information counters. These come in handy because Hat Yai gets very busy at times. The Arrival Hall is on the second floor using Concourses A or B, and Gates 3, 4, 7 and 8. Baggage claim is between the two concourses. Car rental desks are near baggage claim. No ATMs are available at the airport so be sure and exchange some cash during your stop in Bangkok. You'll find plenty of ATMs in town.

Taxis are found just outside the airport doors, costing about $10 CAD for the trip into town. A limo will cost about $12 CAD, while a mini-van shuttle runs $4 CAD. For the adventurous, you can catch a ride to town on a songthaew, sort of a pick-up truck with covered bench seats in the back, or a tuk-tuk, a motorized oversized tricycle with passenger seating, also in the back. These are shared rides and cost just over $1 CAD. Found on the outer edge of the parking lot, you usually have to wait until enough passengers climb aboard before they leave. Rates are stated up front, can often be negotiated and are payable in Thai bahts. You'll see plenty of songthaews and tuk-tuks all over Hat Yai; they are a popular mode of transport.

Things to do in Hat Yai

  • Though Hat Yai has plenty of land-based shopping options, including modern malls such as teen-friendly Lee Garden Plaza or the Odean Shopping Mall, it's the Khlong Hae Floating Market that attracts so much attention. Open from 3:00 am to 9:00 am Friday through Sunday, local farmers, fishermen and tradesmen pull their boats up to a simple wooden dock to sell their wares. Buy a hot breakfast, snacks or fresh fish for dinner. You'll often find hats, baskets and simple bits of clothing on offer. It's your chance to really mingle with the locals. Bargaining on prices is expected.
  • Hat Yai is also big on festivals. Chinese New Year is enthusiastically celebrated with parades, fireworks and lots of food. The Songkran Festival celebrates the Thai New Year, usually the second weekend in April. The three-day festival has the city partying way past midnight.
