Why Fly South African Airways

How to Check-In

Starting 24 hours before the flight's departure time, South African Airways allows passengers to fully check-in online. There's even a mobile option available if you don't have computer access. When you're flying within South Africa, you must arrive at the airline's gate at least 90 minutes early. For international travel, 2 hours is recommended, while flights from Johannesburg to the USA require 3 hours of notice.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

South African Airways' baggage policies are different for Economy and Business classes. If you're travelling in Economy, you're entitled to one piece of carry-on luggage (under 8kg) and one piece of checked baggage (under 23 kg). For Business travellers, you are allowed two pieces of each. Strollers or car seats are exempt from these rules.

Seating On-Board

If you'd like to select a specific seat on the airplane, South African Airways is very flexible. It's even possible to change your mind later on. You can alter your selection up to 24 hours before departure in SAA's "Manage My Booking" section. For an additional fee, there are seats with extra leg room and ones located beside the emergency exits.

Frequent Flyer Rewards

Voyageur is the frequent flyer program for South African Airways. The reward system has 5 different levels: Blue, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Lifetime Platinum. These levels each have their own unique benefits. When travellers accumulate enough points, they can either be spent on future trips, Tier Miles, or other awards Base Miles. South African Airways was actually the first African airline to offer a revenue-based system for flyers. Pretty cool, right?
