St Maarten Airport: Cheap Flights, Tickets and Travel Deals

The tiny Caribbean island of St. Martin may be just 87 square kilometres large, but that has proven to be enough space to be divided roughly down the middle between the French and Dutch sides, referred to as Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten respectively. While the border is, for all practical purposes, essentially non-existent, each side retains its own unique identity, with the Dutch side being the more developed and more popular area, whereas the French side boasts many of the island's more serene natural attractions.

The main airport serving the island is St. Maarten Airport (officially Princess Juliana International Airport) which is located on the Dutch side. The airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean and has flights throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. As a result, finding a flight to St. Maarten is easy. With Price Alerts you can rest assured that you won't miss out on any deals to this Caribbean paradise.

Transportation Options

Check with your hotel to see if they offer airport pickup since many do. Car rental agencies are located outside of the main terminal in a dedicated area along Airport Road. While renting a car is a great way to get around the island, be advised that roads are often very narrow and traffic is notoriously bad. Furthermore, many car rental agencies at the airport prohibit taking rental cars to the French side of the island, so check beforehand. You can also take a taxi. The ride to Philipsburg is about 30 minutes, 15 minutes to Marigot, and 25 minutes to Grand Case.

Terminal Information

The airport is very modern and includes a wide array of shops, restaurants, and lounges. However, what really makes St. Maarten Airport stand out is not the terminal itself, but its runway. Thanks to limited land availability, the runway begins extremely close to Maho Beach. As a result, approaching aircraft fly very low over the beach. Watching the aircraft land at Maho Beach has become a bit of a tourist attraction, although be warned that the jet blast is dangerous and it has caused injuries and even deaths in the past.

What to see and do in St. Maarten

The Dutch side of St. Martin is home to Philipsburg, the island's main city and one of the Caribbean's premier shopping destinations. The Dutch side is also notable for being home to many casinos. Beaches, of course, are the main reason most people come to this island and you will find gorgeous sandy ones dotting the entire coast. The French side, meanwhile, is more low-key and is where you can enjoy some of the island's majestic natural scenery. There are plenty of hotels in St. Martin, but be sure to book yours early so that you get the best rate.
