Getting to La Paz Airport

Flights to La Paz Airport are available from Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver with many routes having one stop in each direction, often in Mexico City. The primary carrier is Aeromexico which does codeshare with WestJet, Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air and Aeroliteral. If you book a codeshare flight, and the itinerary will show the airlines used, your ticket will be on the primary carrier but one or more of your flights will be on a partner airline. Interjet also has flights from Vancouver, but these have two stops in either direction. Your final leg will probably be on Aeromexico, since that carrier has the most traffic into La Paz Airport.

Airport Facilities

La Paz is primarily a regional airport with most flights coming from within Mexico. Flights from Los Angeles, California, are the usual exceptions. Arriving and departing passengers use the same terminal. This smallish airport is usually not that busy, except during spring break or peak holiday travel times. It does have an assortment of snack bars, cafés and shops and does offer WiFi. An Aerocambio currency exchange office is open daily from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm, while an ATM is available 24/7.

Rental car desks are next to baggage claim, which is on the ground floor of the two-storey terminal. Taxis are just outside the arrival doors. The fare to downtown La Paz runs about $20.00 CAD. Shared shuttles are sometimes available, costing about $12.00 CAD per person. Rates are negotiated before you leave the airport. A taxi is also the preferred way to get around La Paz, along with walking or riding a bicycle. Most fares within town are less than $10.00 CAD, and are negotiated in advance. Accepted currency is the Mexican Peso.

Things to do in La Paz

  • La Paz is known for its beaches and Playa El Tesoro is no exception. It's a quiet strip of sand fronting the Sea of Cortez, great for non-motorized water sports, a bit of fishing or perhaps even seeing dolphins and whales breaching from shore. Boat tours are available to take you to some of the offshore island, most of which have a desert landscape that contrasts with the deep blue waters. You'll need sunscreen, a hat and a cover-up. That Mexican sun can burn if you're not careful.
  • Every year the California grey whales come to the Sea of Cortez to mate and give birth. Several whale watching tours get you out on the water to get a glimpse of these highly social animals. Snorkelling and SCUBA diving tours are also popular. If you'd rather stay on dry land, bird watching tours are available.
